Coffee company to expand roasting operation
Aug. 27, 2025
Approaching a decade since its founding, The Breaks Coffee Roasting Co. has announced it’s expanding.
The retail location at 311 E. 12th St., which opened five years ago, is not moving or changing, but co-owners Corey Gerlach and Mary Campbell had been in search of a warehouse in central Sioux Falls for a few years to fit their growing needs.
They found the perfect space about a half-mile away, just north of the Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center campus – but it won’t be open to the public.
This expansion will help grow wholesale operations, which began in February 2016, add office space, storage and a small commercial kitchen with other ideas in the works.
One of the owners’ biggest needs was a larger roaster that more than doubles their current capacity.
“Our small roaster will continue to roast at the storefront, but we’re hoping to expand wholesale operations by roasting at the warehouse,” Campbell said.
As head roaster, Gerlach said the extra space adds the potential to grow and frees up more time to focus with Campbell on other passions and dreams within the business.
While there’s some fear of the unknown with an expansion of business and increasing cost of coffee, the team is excited to take this next step.
At the same time, they reflect on their gratitude for these past five years.
“We had no idea it would be like this when we opened,” Campbell said. “We wouldn’t have ever dreamt of a community like this.”
They plan to be operational in September. Stay in touch with The Breaks on social media, or join its mailing list.
