Cluckin’ Good Chicken & BBQ — the old Bob’s — opens in new location today

By Rosemary McCoy

Fans of the former Bob’s Carryout & Delivery chicken don’t have to wait any longer.

The renamed Cluckin’ Good Chicken & BBQ opens at 11 a.m. today in its new location at 3607 E. 10th St.

“It looks nothing like the old place and the name is different, but it’s still the same great food,” owner Ben Weiland said.

The old location on West 12th Street under the landmark Bob’s Cafe sign had a nostalgic charm with its counter-only dining just a few feet from grill. The new spot in a retail center at 10th and Bahnson Avenue is bright, and everything is new except for the broasters, the smoker and other kitchen equipment.

Customers will order at the cash register and can sit along a counter, where they can watch the chicken being broasted, or at tables. The seating capacity is about 25 diners, Weiland said. The focus of the business will continue to be carryout, delivery and catering. Customers can call ahead or place orders online.

The new location doesn’t have a grill, so breakfast and hamburgers have been removed from the menu. Hash browns are gone but replaced by mashed potatoes. Instead of monthly specials, Cluckin’ will have weekly deals.

Weiland said the staff is tweaking production to improve service.

“We hope to minimize wait times,” he said. “Before, we’d tell people who called in a order that it would be 20 minutes, and sometimes they still had to wait 20 minutes more when they got here.”

They’ll start cooking a small amount of chicken ahead of the busy times, so it might be possible for someone to order a four-piece mixed dinner and get it quickly, Weiland said.

He’s excited about welcoming back old customers and meeting new ones.

The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
