City sales tax shows continued sharp increase in business for several industries

Most industries in Sioux Falls continue to experience a big bump in sales, according to the most recent city sales tax report.
Year-over-year, sales tax collection was up 19.4 percent in August, which represents sales from July.
The rolling 12-month growth is 11.1 percent.
Some of the biggest increases in sales tax in August came from:
- Sporting good stores, up $12 million, or 97 percent
- Eating establishments, up $11.7 million, or 33 percent
- Department and general merchandise stores, $8.4 million, or 12 percent
- Construction, up $8.4 million, or 97 percent
While not as high of a dollar increase, movie theaters by far showed the largest increase by percent, at $600,000 or 397 percent.
The city entertainment tax collection was up 23.4 percent in August, and up 12.3 percent on a 12-month rolling basis.
Lodging establishments reported a $7 million, or 74 percent, year-over-year increase. Drinking establishments showed a $1.4 million, or 29 percent, increase in sales tax revenue.
The industries showing a year-over-year drop in revenue were:
- Health services, down $7.6 million, or 54 percent
- Radiotelephone communications, down $1.2 million, or 15 percent
- Accounting and auditing services, down $500,000, or 11 percent
- Hobby and toy stores, down $100,000, or 4 percent
