Building activity slows in November
Dec. 1, 2025
November proved to be a slower month for building permits in Sioux Falls.
The city issued $35 million in new building activity for the month, led by a $10.4 million permit for the butterfly garden addition at the Great Plains Zoo.
Overall, building activity totals $1.25 billion for the year, ahead of $1 billion for the same time the past two years.
New commercial construction at $667.1 million also is outpacing last year, which was at $579.2 million. In 2023, it was $575.1 million.
Commercial additions and remodeling projects are at almost $300 million, almost twice the $167.3 million in permits issued for the same time last year and ahead of $210.1 million in 2023.
New residential construction is at $206.3 million for the first 11 months of the year, compared with $207.7 million last year and $176.4 million two years ago. That represents fewer single-family homes though: 336 permits this year, compared with 507 last year and 403 two years ago.
The city has issued permits for 940 multifamily units, compared with 1,120 last year and 1,823 two years ago.
Residential remodeling is at $80.7 million, slightly behind last year’s $82.8 million and $94.5 million in 2023.
