Building activity shows slower start to year

Feb. 1, 2024

Sioux Falls building activity isn’t as robust to start the year as it was the past two years.

The valuation of permits in January totaled $36 million, down from $62.3 million last year and $44.6 million at the start of 2022.

The bright spot is new residential. The city issued permits for 10 more homes in Sioux Falls to start this year compared to a year ago. The permits for 14 new single-family homes had a total valuation of $4 million, compared to four homes at $1.8 million in January 2023 and 28 to begin 2022.

Residential additions and remodels also are slightly ahead of last year at $3.4 million, compared with $3.2 million.

Commercial construction is about half of last year, totaling $28.6 million split between new construction and remodeling or expansion, compared with a total of $57.3 million last year.

No permits were issued for projects that exceeded $10 million.

Here are the projects valued at $2 million or more:

  • Walmart remodeling, 5521 E. Arrowhead Parkway, $4.2 million.
  • Linedrive Apartments, 24-unit building, 3400 S. Linedrive Ave., $3.6 million.
  • Two restaurants at The Steel District, 150 E. Fourth Place, $3.3 million.
  • Walmart remodeling, 5200 W. 60th St. N., $2.9 million.
  • Restaurant at The Steel District, 200 E. Fourth Place, $2.3 million.
  • Minnehaha Country Club remodeling, 3101 W. 22nd St., $2 million.
