Avera Race Against Cancer to air on live TV

May 3, 2024

For the first time in its 36-year history, the Avera Race Against Cancer will be available live on television.

Coverage will begin at 7:55 a.m. May 11 on Dakota News Now’s KSFY-TV.

Dakota News Now anchors Brian Allen and Anndrea Anderson will host the live coverage and will be joined by other members of the Dakota News Now team. Many of them are participating in the 5k and 10k runs as well as the walks.

“We couldn’t be more excited to broadcast the Avera Race Against Cancer this year,” said Jim Berman, Dakota News Now president and general manager.

“The race is such a special event, and we are thrilled to partner with the Avera Foundation to share this event with our viewers.”

About 200 people participated in the race when it began in 1998. It now regularly attracts about 6,000 people each year.

The Avera Race Against Cancer is one of the largest fundraisers in South Dakota, raising more than $500,000 a year. The money stays local to support cancer patients.

“Dakota News Now’s live broadcast of the race is a welcome addition to this year’s event. We are excited to share this long-standing tradition of hope for cancer survivors and families with viewers,” said Dzenan Berberovic, chief philanthropy officer for Avera. “We are grateful to Dakota News Now and all our sponsors and participants.”

Coverage will include stories about the people involved in the race, as well as live interviews along the race route. Viewers also will be provided with information on how they can make donations online.

In addition to live coverage of the Sioux Falls race, Dakota News Now also will highlight races in Mitchell, Pierre, Yankton and Marshall, Minnesota.
