At Maguire Iron, ‘human flourishing’ drives culture

It’s a simple philosophy: The better a company takes care of its employees, the better they will perform, the better they will care for customers and the better they will be at home for their families.

That’s the foundation of culture at Maguire Iron, where a core value is “Grow the Family” and the company strives to create a culture where everyone flourishes personally and professionally.

“We believe that honoring our team members’ human dignity is key to a great culture and for the common good of all of our team members,” CEO Gene Jones Jr. said. “At Maguire, we want our team members to have an experience where they are fulfilled both personally and professionally.”

That takes the form of everything from simple gestures like celebrating employee milestone anniversaries to major investments in supporting employees’ work experience.

“Without our team members, Maguire does not exist,” president Scott Jones said. “We look at our employees and their families as members of our own family. Celebrating their achievements is important.”

Team members’ achievements are celebrated here, not only for longevity but for the day-to-day value they bring to the organization. Team members can nominate their peers for Employee of the Quarter recognition based on reflecting Maguire core values — and it has been a huge success.

“Tyson carries ‘Grow the Family’ in a professional and personal way,” said a Maguire team member in nominating a co-worker. “Since being with Maguire, Tyson has always connected with employees and customers. He takes action when needed and is always willing to lend a hand when needed. He represents Maguire and the core values very well.”

While it’s rewarding to be recognized by leadership or owners, “for team members to be nominated and recognized by their peers is the best,” said Brian Cooper, vice president of business development.

“I love seeing the look on their faces when they are told they have won the Employee of the Quarter award. It means a lot to them.”

Maguire also says thank you to team members in smaller ways. Each Thanksgiving and Christmas, company leaders hand out turkeys and hams for their team members to take home and share with their families.

“This is a tradition that is so much fun for us,” Gene Jones Jr. said. “We love thanking our team members in person while wishing them and their families a Happy Thanksgiving or a Merry Christmas.”

A culture that aims for human flourishing is about more than saying thank you, though. It’s how Maguire trains and grows team members in their roles that helps them truly achieve their potential.

“Training and providing our team members with the proper knowledge and skills is key to their success at Maguire,” chief operating officer Mike Farnsworth said. “Not only training them on job-related skills but in our safety practices. The safety of our team members is our No. 1 priority.”

Maguire offers on-the-job training and advancement opportunities, which means intentionally taking time throughout the year to host meetings that encompass safety and hands-on training. These training courses educate team members on job-specific duties, how to improve quality and how to safely execute every task.

Maguire invests in specialized vendors to teach the latest in fall-protection equipment.

“Training and safety are areas our team members take very seriously,” Farnsworth said. “The more knowledge our team members have, the more fulfilled they will be, the more they will know and the better projects they will deliver to our customers.”
