As GreatLIFE adds Washington Pavilion member benefit, here’s a look at what’s new

GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness members have a new indoor member benefit thanks to a partnership with the Washington Pavilion.

Pavilion memberships will be 20 percent off for GreatLIFE members, offering them a chance to access the downtown gem every day and take advantage of all that’s new.

“We’re excited to offer this to our members,” GreatLIFE president Donn Hill said. “It’s another great opportunity to spend time together as a family and still stay active thanks to the many interactive exhibits.”

Pavilion memberships provide unlimited access to the buildings, early access to purchase tickets and a discount at the delicious Leonardo’s Cafe.

If you’ve not been to the Pavilion lately, you might be surprised at all that’s new. Here are five of our favorites:

Science center upgrades

From a space theme on the second floor to new additions upstairs, there are tons of new activities to enjoy at the Kirby Science Discovery Center.

A former gift shop has been converted to the Jacks Imagination Lab, sponsored by SDSU, which is equipped with iPad minis for kids to learn science, technology, engineering, art and math skills. The room also is used for classes and workshops.

This spring, Health Quest by Sanford opened on the fourth floor, bringing opportunities to explore how the human body works. Exhibits include a life-size ambulance, a 21-foot model of the human body complete with supersized organs and a dedicated infant and toddler space.

“We are very excited about this entire floor full of incredible new exhibits,” said Darrin Smith, Washington Pavilion president and CEO. “This is something that Sioux Falls has never seen before, and we know kids and parents alike are going to love it.”

It complements the FitZone, also on the fourth floor of the science center and sponsored by Sanford Health.

Raven Children’s Studio

The recently renovated Raven Children’s Studio ensures kids leave the Visual Arts Center loving art as much as adults.

An animation station prompts kids to sketch and color their own cartoon.

“We have a big crayon display — an exhibit we built in-house —  so it’s all about coloring and drawing and having fun,” Smith said.

SculptureWalk

SculptureWalk recently opened its visitors center in the lobby of the Pavilion, “which is very cool,” Smith said. “It’s an area people can come watch a video on the history of SculptureWalk and see where all the sculptures are this year.”

The first and last sculpture on the walk are at the Pavilion.

Outdoor garden

And speaking of sculpture, don’t miss the Paladino Hohm Sculpture Garden, which opened last year. This $1 million project is a beautiful collection of sculptures surrounded by a water foundation, native plants and grasses, a seating area and performance space.

It’s the perfect spot for an outdoor lunch any day or a break while visiting downtown.

“This summer, we’ll start having live music one day a week to get people coming to the Pavilion,” Smith said. “We want to keep reminding people what a multipurpose facility this is and how much fun there is to be had here.”

What’s next

The Pavilion continues to bring new events and attractions, so your membership will always bring a different experience. Next up: South Dakota takes center stage as the third floor of the science center is converted to an Avera-sponsored space that educates about key industries in the state, including agriculture.

“And we’re going to have a new gallery in the Visual Arts Center that will be South Dakota-themed. We’ve just been using a lot of common sense and listening to what people want,” Smith said. “We’re coming up on the 20th anniversary of the Pavilion next summer, and it’s no different than any facility anywhere or even your home. It needs to be refreshed, and you need these makeovers from time to time.”
