Architecture firm moves offices to support growth

Aug. 22, 2022

Nearly two years after merging with an Omaha architecture firm, the Sioux Falls office of Schemmer has a new location.

The firm moved from 625 S. Minnesota Ave. to the Hegg Building at 1300 W. 57th St.

The Sioux Falls office was started by Robin Miller as RJ Miller Associates in 1989, and he added partners in 1996. It was MSH Architects when it merged with Schemmer in early 2021.

That took the nine-person firm to a combined team of 150.

Schemmer was founded in 1959 and is a full-service architecture, engineering and construction field services consultant. In addition to Omaha and Sioux Falls, there are five branch offices in Nebraska, Iowa and Oklahoma.

“The merger has been a great success. It has allowed Schemmer to expand into a new geographic market and has provided opportunities for the Sioux Falls staff to work on larger and more diverse projects,” said Katie Ashmore, who leads business development in the Sioux Falls office.

“Our five-year business plan has strategies directed at growing our Sioux Falls office in both staff and service offerings.”

A key move brought South Dakota native Matt Sutton home to work from the Sioux Falls office, she added. Sutton is a civil engineer specializing in civil/site design.

“His leadership and technical expertise as a civil engineer add to the versatility of the Sioux Falls office and expands the services we can provide existing clients and new prospects,” Ashmore said. “By having a full-service, architecture and engineering firm, we are able to broaden our client base and work with many more companies than we could before.”

This year has been “fantastic,” she added, with projects including a design for the Mitchell High School.

“We have more projects on our backlog than we’ve seen in quite some time. Schemmer has continued to stay really busy with new projects and recruiting new staff.”
