March 15, 2022

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Nolan Hazard, an architect with Koch Hazard Architects.

Name: Nolan Hazard

Age: 30

Hometown: Sioux Falls

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

I grew up in Sioux Falls and then left for school in Minneapolis and Kansas City. My first job after grad school was in Sacramento, California. What brought me back was the opportunity to join KHA and practice in my hometown.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

Family, friends and a passion for downtown Sioux Falls.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

The ideas and the tangible results.

How did you get connected to your industry?

I’ve been connected to architecture through family most of my life. There was a time when I set out for college that I thought I might take a different path, but nothing else I’ve tried has been as rewarding or as attuned to the set of things I enjoy and am good at.

Describe Koch Hazard Architects in three words.

Local. Thoughtful. Innovative.

What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?

I’ve only met one person that can beat me at pingpong.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

There’s a lot of great buildings in Sioux Falls, and serving on the Sioux Falls Board of Historic Preservation gives me an opportunity to discuss them, learn about them and promote their use and conservation.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

Shoki Ramen House, a ramen spot I frequented while I lived in Sacramento that I miss dearly.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

At Koch Hazard Architects leading projects that continue to strengthen and provide community for Sioux Falls and help to create a strong sense of place.
