Active Generations names new CEO

April 22, 2024

A member of the Helpline Center’s leadership team has been named the new CEO of Active Generations.

Betsy Schuster will fill the role of longtime CEO Gerald Beninga, who is retiring after leading the organization since 1990.

Schuster most recently served as vice president of program development for Helpline.

In a statement announcing her hiring, the board of directors for Active Generations cited her “proven track record in nonprofit program development, leading and motivating people, and robust experience in community engagement.”

In her role at Helpline Center, Schuster helped launch and expand multiple programs statewide.

“I am incredibly humbled and honored to have been chosen as the next CEO of Active Generations. One of my core leadership philosophies revolves around prioritizing the well-being of those we serve, believing that by focusing on their needs, we can continue and grow the incredible work of Active Generations,” she said in a statement.

Schuster begins her new role May 6 and will transition with Beninga until he retires later in May.

Active Generations is a nonprofit organization serving aging adults and providing opportunities to enhance their quality of life through programs, services and education. There are two Sioux Falls locations, including the recently opened east-side location adjacent to Dawley Farm Village.
