City building permits down 8 percent from year ago

The city of Sioux Falls issued building permits in July for $76.1 million worth of construction, and while the gap closed, it wasn’t enough to catch up to last year’s record pace.
The total valuation for permits reached $415.7 million, 8 percent below the $448.8 million total for the same period a year ago, according to statistics from the building services division.
The most significant area of decline continues to be in apartment construction. The city has issued permits for projects with a total valuation of $50.2 million, compared with $119.9 million a year ago. Developers have permitted 565 apartment units so far this year. The total through July 2016 was 1,263.
Manufacturing projects have reached $19.8 million, up from $11.4 million a year ago.
The city issued permits in July for eight projects with a valuation of more than $1 million:
- $15.3 million: Gage Brothers, foundation for precast concrete manufacturing plant, 2800 N. Bahnson Ave.
- $12.8 million: City of Sioux Falls, water reclamation facility project, 4500 N. Sycamore Ave.
- $10.8 million: Beal Development, 76-unit Commons apartment project, 4009 W. Mary Jo Place.
- $5.1 million, Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center, fifth-floor build-out for Avera Prairie Center, 1000 E. 23rd St.
- $3 million, Pyramid Properties, Keller Williams Sioux Falls Realty office building, 6300 S. Connie Ave.
- $1.6 million, Win Chill, foundation for warehouse/distribution center, 5050 W. Foundation Court.
- $1.6 million, Buehler Development, building for Lift Solutions, 4120 N. Potsdam Ave.
- $1.1 million, GPS LLC, Shadow Creek strip mall, 1501 E. 69th St.
