Junk in the Trunk moves to larger west-side space

Aug. 27, 2025

A local business known for selling new, used and repurposed furniture and more has expanded to a larger location in western Sioux Falls.

Junk in the Trunk has moved to 5303 W. 41st St. in the space formerly housing Mulberry Market on the southwest corner of 41st Street and Marion Road.

Chris and Renee Johnson have been in business together for 13 years and made their way to Sioux Falls after starting in Luverne, Minnesota.

For seven years, they were on 41st Street near Western Avenue but started to outgrow the location, needing more storage and warehouse space.

Junk in the Trunk moved in June, and the Johnsons said they have been pleased with the change so far.

“We now have better signage, it’s easier to drive in and out without having to fight all of the 41st Street traffic,” Renee Johnson said. “It has been a very welcoming community that has embraced us in this new location.”

Johnson works with three local vendors who bring in the products.

“I’m very picky because I want good quality and a good price for our customers,” she explained.

“Each one has their own unique style.”

They restock newly arrived products daily. And every day, she posts photos on Facebook of the new furniture with pricing and measurements.

They turn over product so quickly that the Johnsons said they flip the store completely about three times per month.

In addition to home decor, candles and popular bamboo sheets, Junk in the Trunk carries paint brands for DIY updating or refinishing projects at home.

If the store doesn’t have what customers are looking for, they can bring in boxes of unassembled furniture from other retailers like Amazon and have it put together for an hourly rate to keep stimulating the local economy.

No matter how customers show their support, the owners said they’re grateful for those new and returning shoppers.

“We do things like the historical home tour where we’ll see people all the time who say ‘I bought this from you,’ and it’s fun to see how they display and use it,” Johnson said.
