Aug. 1, 2025

The city of Sioux Falls issued permits for more than $100 million in additional building activity in July, bringing the total for the year to more than $800 million.

Permits totaled $107 million in July, driven by $23.4 million for a new Amazon operations center at Foundation Park in northwest Sioux Falls.

The city also issued a $19 million permit for additions and remodeling at Central Church at 3102 W. Ralph Rogers Road.

Building permits totaled $833.4 million through the first seven months of the year, far ahead of last year’s $542.5 million and $645.2 million in 2023.

New commercial activity is driving the growth at $467.7 million versus $273.5 million last year and $337.5 million two years ago.

Commercial additions and remodeling totaled $197.7 million compared with $106 million last year and $154 million in 2023.

New residential permits also slid ahead of last year at $122.8 million compared with $112.8 million and $94.3 million two years ago. That represents fewer houses though — 230 homes versus 331 last year and 235 two years ago.

Permits have been issued for 679 new multifamily units through July, compared with 574 last year and 1,175 two years ago.

Residential additions and remodeling work is a little behind the last two years, totaling $48.2 million compared with $50.3 million last year and $59.4 million two years ago.

The overall number of permits issued for all work is down, totaling 3,308 versus 3,638 for the same time last year and 4,550 two years ago.
