Sioux Falls escapes most recent Macy’s, Kohl’s closure lists

Jan. 10, 2025

Sioux Falls’ national big-box department stores appear to be staying open.

Macy’s Inc. has announced 66 stores that are closing — and the one at The Empire Mall isn’t among them.

The retailer said last year that the plan was to close 150 underperforming stores, or about one-third of its locations, by the end of 2026.

That will leave Macy’s with about 350 “go-forward” locations.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” Tony Spring, chairman and CEO of Macy’s, said in a statement.

Kohl’s also announced 27 underperforming stores that will close by April, but neither Sioux Falls store is on the list. Kohl’s has about 1,150 locations.

“We always take these decisions very seriously,” Tom Kingsbury, CEO of Kohl’s, said in a statement. “As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”
