The Empire Mall resumes normal hours, with added security

Dec. 7, 2024

The Empire Mall is planning to open with normal hours today, following shots fired Friday night that caused stores to lock down.

The plan is to open at 10 a.m. for business as usual but with additional security and police presence, according to general manager Dan Gies.

At 7:30 p.m. Friday, calls came in to police reporting shots fired near the store Zumiez, which is across from The Buckle in the Macy’s wing. Shell casings later were found, according to police.

Officers this morning reported that a suspect thought to be involved in the incident was identified, and the Sioux Falls Police Department was able to obtain an arrest warrant. Officers arrested 18-year-old Jaden Michael Justis Bingham of Sioux Falls on two counts of aggravated assault with a bond of $100,000.

No one was injured in the incident Friday night. Police Chief Jon Thum said it was an isolated incident, and there is not thought to be a broader threat to the mall or community. For details on the police response, click below.
