Sioux Falls surpasses $1B in construction for the year

Dec. 2, 2024

Sioux Falls has exceeded $1 billion in construction valuation for the fourth consecutive year.

Permits totaled $1.036 billion through November, down slightly from $1.056 billion the same time last year.

In 2022, when the city set a record, permits totaled $1.84 billion through November.

This year’s total is bolstered by new construction, which is outpacing 2023 both in commercial and residential projects.

New commercial is at $579.2 million, up from $575.1 million last year. The drop is in commercial additions and remodeling projects, which are at $167.3 million versus $210.1 million.

New residential at $207.7 million through November is ahead of last year’s $176.4 million. It represents 507 new single-family homes, which is 104 more than the same time last year.

The city has issued permits for 1,120 multifamily units, down from 1,823 last year.

Through November, the city has issued 5,950 permits, down from 7,053 last year and 10,894 two years ago.

Major projects that were issued permits last month include a residential building on the new LifeScape campus in northwest Sioux Falls for $30 million, an office addition at Missouri River Energy Services at 3724 W. Avera Drive for $8.1 million and a warehouse on the Dakota Digital campus in northwest Sioux Falls for $5 million.
