The next steps in your business journey will become more clear at an upcoming event called “Scale or Sell?”

Presented by Digital Culture Architects, the event will be Nov. 12 beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn Sioux Falls Downtown.

“Our goal in offering this event is to challenge and inspire business owners, equity partners and other executives to create succession and exit plans for their businesses,” said Daniel Eppinga, partner and executive architect of Digital Culture Architects.

The reality is:

  • 75 percent of business owners do not have a formal succession plan.
  • 70 percent to 80 percent of listed businesses never sell, often because of poor exit strategy preparation.
  •  66 percent of family-owned businesses do not survive the transition to the next generation.
  • 48 percent of business owners do not have an exit strategy despite planning to leave the business within the next decade.
  • 50 percent of businesses do not maximize their value because they don’t align leadership and operations.

“The event will address those stats in a community conversation and discuss steps that can be taken to ensure that family, business and community disruption in the Sioux Falls area is limited because of thoughtful planning in advance,” Eppinga said.

The program will include a speaker and panel-style format with local executives, experts and business owners to have a community conversation about these statistics and provide data and insight as to how business owners can improve their chance of a maximum exit.

“We’re excited to give some exposure and recognition to our event partners and participants,” Eppinga said. “They’re playing a positive impact and role in the Sioux Falls business community, and there’s a lot others can take away from their experience and expertise.”

The event is an especially good fit for business owners who feel “stuck” or those looking to transition their business in some form, he said.

“Equity partners looking to maximize their investment before a liquidity event and executives who are guiding a company through a pivot will also find a lot of value here, as well as professional service providers in the financial services, accounting and legal fields, along with their clients.”

Digital Culture Architects will detail its business planning process that helps business owners and partners called the O.A.S.I.S. Business Journey.

“We partner with companies as a fractional executive services agency to facilitate and navigate these conversations, make the tough decisions and implement a shared vision for your business’ future,” Eppinga said.

“There is a freedom in succession planning well in advance — and planning is a process.”
