East-side building on market with local pharmacy closure

June 19, 2024

The building at 10th Street and Cliff Avenue that used to house True Care Family Pharmacy is for sale.

The pharmacy opened in 2017 at 1120 E. 10th St. and was owned by Lindsey Osterkamp, a former K-mart pharmacist.

After the pharmacy closed in May, Hy-Vee purchased the customer files.

Osterkamp said challenges facing the pharmacy industry drove her decision to end the business. Pharmacy benefit managers have made it financially prohibitive for independents to compete, she said.

“It just makes it really hard to stay in business because they have a stronghold on the industry right now, and even some of the chain pharmacies are having problems,” she said

“You’re seeing a lot of Rite Aids closing, and they’re closing Walgreens, so if those guys can’t even make it, how do you expect a little guy to make it? So it’s a tough world in retail pharmacy for everyone.”

She’s taking the summer off to spend time with her kids before deciding on next steps.

The building is listed for sale by Ryan Tysdal of Van Buskirk Cos.

“It’s a freestanding 1,600-square-foot retail building on a hard corner,” Tysdal said. “That’s a very desirable opportunity for a number of different buyers.”

The building also had been a longtime home to Little Caesars since the 1980s, he added.

“The high-profile visibility on such a busy corner will be attractive to buyers,” Tysdal predicted.
