Accountant enjoys going ‘beyond the numbers’
This week’s Up-and-Comer is Tommy Pollema, an accountant at Cain Ellsworth & Company LLP.
Name: Tommy Pollema
Age: 30
Hometown: Hull, Iowa
What brought you to Sioux Falls?
My wife was working in Sioux Falls for Make-A-Wish South Dakota, so after our wedding I moved here. Also, Cain Ellsworth was looking to expand and create a second office location in the Sioux Falls market, so the move was an easy decision.
What keeps you in Sioux Falls?
It is a growing community with lots of opportunities. It is a city with all the amenities, but it has a small-town feel. It is also a great place to raise a family.
What’s your favorite thing about your job?
The people. I enjoy meeting new people and building relationships with our clients. It is more exciting helping people and learning about their business instead of just putting numbers on a form. I also work with some great individuals who are entertaining and keep me on my toes.
How did you get connected to your industry?
My high school business teacher introduced me to accounting. It was an industry that was in need of workers and was a great career path. That led me to the University of Northern Iowa, where I graduated and passed the CPA exam.
Describe Cain Ellsworth in three words.
Beyond the numbers.
What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?
Topgolf or Chick-fil-A.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
On the path to partnership at Cain Ellsworth & Company, along with being a leader in the community.
