Restaurant Roundup: Scotch Hoy craft beer, ice cream for breakfast

Feb. 2, 2022

Lawyer Scott Hoy’s status as a Sioux Falls legend is growing – this time as the inspiration for a new craft beer at Look’s Beer Co. Scotch Hoy is a Scotch ale that’s on tap or available in four-packs at Look’s Marketplace. It has been eight years since one of Hoy’s rambling TV commercials went viral after Jimmy Fallon razzed it on his late-night TV show. Since then, Hoy’s image has appeared on a devotional candle that was sold in 2017 at Zandbroz Variety, and he’s part of the Sunny’s Pizzeria mural of Sioux Falls notables that went up last year on the side of the restaurant. Be prepared for a kick from Scotch Hoy. It has an 8.7 percent ABV.

Love cheese? Look’s Marketplace has started a Cheese of the Month Club. Curated by the cheesemongers in the grocery area, the subscription will run for three months and can be renewed after that. Subscribers will pick up their box every month and pay as they go or all at once if it’s a gift. There are three tiers, ranging from $45 to $75 each month. Each box includes three cheeses. The second tier adds salami and crackers, and the top level includes everything and a bottle of wine.

Look’s also crowned the winner of Burger Mania, its January competition among the four kitchens. The walkup kitchen won the championship wrestling belt and bragging rights with its creation, The Hardy Boy. The burger features two smashed patties, pastrami, provolone cheese, slaw, shoestring fries and secret sauce on a brioche bun. It’s still on the menu in case you missed trying it — or loved it!

Stensland Family Farms is throwing its annual Ice Cream for Breakfast event Friday at all three retail stores. This year’s menu includes caramel roll or doughnut sundaes, chai latte or hot chocolate floats and waffles with warm baked apples, maple syrup and ice cream. Hours are 9 a.m. to noon.

Papa Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza is temporarily closed while it makes the move from its home in the Jones421 Building north on Phillips to The Cascade. It’s hoping to reopen on Valentine’s Day. The pizza oven made it though!

K Restaurant typically opens on First Friday for dinner, but this month, it’s doing a special lunch. Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Meals will be packaged to go, but seating will be available. Availability of each offering is limited.

The three cocktail lounges under The Carpenter Group are having another in-house Tri Cup competition – customers picked Carpenter Bar’s Old-Fashioned in November – this time featuring pink drinks for the month of love. Buy a drink at each lounge and turn in your card with your vote, and you’ll get a free signature cocktail. Carpenter’s My Bitter Heart features bourbon, Campari, honey syrup, lemon and egg white. The Treasury offers The Pink Flamingo with white rum, falernum, pomegranate shrub and lemon. Highball’s Love on the Rocks has Chartreuse and St-Germaine with lemon juice, raspberry syrup and a cabernet float.

Want fun nonalcoholic drinks for the Valentine’s season? Zooks Coffee Bar in Tea has three: Cupid’s Pink Matcha, Cherry or Raspberry Mocha and Lavender Almond Latte.

The monthly features at Tinner’s Public House have a mostly Italian theme. Fan favorite Italian nachos make an appearance along with the pasta dish shrimp fra diavolo and The Works flatbread with pepperoni, Italian sausage, veggies and a four-cheese blend.

Rudy M. Navarrete’s Tex-Mexican Catering’s gig serving tacos and more every at Severance Brewing Co. has been extended through February. Hours are 5 to 8 p.m. The partnership began in December.

Sioux Falls Food Co+op has expanded its offerings of food from Sanaa’s 8th Street Gourmet. The grocery store at 18th and Minnesota is stocking several of Sanaa’s frozen entrees, most of which are gluten-free, vegan or vegetarian. Choose from eggplant caponata, lentil and potato shepherd’s pie, spanakopita, garbanzo bean fatat and eggplant moussaka. Other new offerings include red lentil and vegetable bean soups and shish tawook sauce.

Last month, we highlighted Carnaval Brazilian Grill’s new meat of the month feature. Now, the restaurant has released the entire year’s offerings. February, chicken breast wrapped in bacon; March: Parmesan pork; April, spicy shrimp; May, sweet chili chicken thighs; June, beef tenderloin wrapped in bacon; July, beef ribs; August, leg of lamb; September, chimichurri pork; October, chicken hearts; November, turkey breast wrapped in turkey bacon; and December, honey-glazed ham.

Fazoli’s has a new 5 Under $5 Under 500 Calories menu to help diners stick to their New Year’s resolutions. Choose from rotini with marinara, keto pepperoni and bacon flatbread, five-piece buffalo boneless wings, small spaghetti with meat sauce and a small fettuccine alfredo.

If you’re the person who always uses the crushed red pepper packets on your pizza, you’ll probably like these limited-time offerings from Pizza Hut. Try the spicy double pepperoni, spicy Hawaiian chicken or spicy veggie. Each one features a spicy pizza sauce, sliced red jalapenos and pepper flakes. The only size is large, and they’re available until March 12.

Tillford Rye Farm between Brandon and Garretson has started selling shares for its CSA program. Weekly shares will begin in June and run through October. “Expect a large assortment of organically grown greens, peppers, tomatoes, melons, squash, broccoli, colorful cauliflower, beans, peas, quick roots like radishes-turnips-beets-carrots and plenty more,” the farm said in a post on social media. Two share sizes are available, and pickup locations include the farm or Sioux Falls Food Co+op. Get details on the farm’s website.
