Minnehaha County accepting applications for W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds task force

Feb. 10, 2022

Want to help determine the future of the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds?

You have until Feb. 28 to apply to be part of the task force that will help guide a study and make recommendations.

The Minnehaha County Commission is looking to the task force to evaluate the property and facilities, which are located at 100 N. Lyon Blvd., near Interstate 29 and 12th Street.

Winona Axtell gifted the land for the fairgrounds in memory of her husband, William, in 1938 and 1942.

The 12- to 16-person task force will be comprised of community members who do not have anything financial to gain from any recommendations, including facilities, financials, events and opportunities. The task force will work with a facilitator to review the history of the fair, community needs and community support for the activities at the fairgrounds and will create a vision for it.

“We have 18 applications to date, and these people are excited about the potential for the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds,” administrative officer Carol Muller said.

“We are looking for people to serve who have varied backgrounds, including but not limited to agriculture, finance, business and a general interest in the fairgrounds. We anticipated there would be interest in the task force, and we continue to be excited to see applications.”

Meetings will be open to the public and include public input.
