Interested in real estate? South Dakota Land and Lending Conference comes to Sioux Falls next week

Aug. 30, 2021

This paid event listing is sponsored by the 2021 South Dakota Land and Lending Conference.

No matter what your connection to real estate, if you’re interested in the field, an event next week is for you.

It’s the inaugural South Dakota Land and Lending Conference, which is organized by the Valuation and Rural Real Estate Affinity Group of the Ness School of Management and Economics at SDSU and held Sept. 10 at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

“Several years ago, SDSU received a minor in land valuation and rural real estate,” said Ryan McKnight, a real estate, law and management lecturer at SDSU and member of the planning committee.

“Accordingly, we went down to the Iowa Land Expo where we saw the power of networking and real estate. Upon returning to South Dakota, we knew we could put on a similar program.”

The event is designed to encourage and strengthen the relationship between education and rural real estate.

We will offer people a great education experience as well as a networking experience,” McKnight said.

“We have some of the brightest real estate minds anywhere, and we want to showcase them. Whether they be a Ph.D. in ag economics, a lawyer, a banker or a developer, we have some very impressive real estate professionals in South Dakota.”

Here’s a preview of the agenda:

Keynote speaker: Brent Gleeson is a Navy SEAL combat veteran and award-winning entrepreneur who will speak about how to apply the same leadership and culture principles that forge the most elite special operations units in the world for building high-performance teams that lead change with passion, grit and resilience.

Economics panel: Addressing interest rates, monetary policy and other economic factors, panelists include Dr. Joseph Santos, professor of economics at SDSU; Dr. Ted Stewart, chief economist for Stewart Title; and Cortney Cowley, senior economist for the Federal Reserve Bank.

Real estate panel: Past, Present and Future of Development and Brokerage in Sioux Falls: Moderated by Bill Zortman, this panel includes Craig Lloyd, board chair of Lloyd Cos.; Chuck Sutton, land broker and auctioneer; and Michael Bender, founder of Bender Commercial Real Estate Services.

The afternoon breakouts include:

      • Group 1:
        • Electronic Filing and the Digital Economy from a Banking Perspective
        • Ag Land Values and Predictions
        • Remote Notarizations and Electronic Closings
        • Sioux Falls Commercial Real Estate Panel from NAI
        • Sanitary Improvement Districts and Land Development
        • Wind Easement Valuation
        • Marijuana Issues and Impacts on Land Values
      • Group 2:
        • Mediation for the Real Estate Professional
        • Ag Land Management
        • Housing Challenges and Opportunities – Affordable Housing and Rural Development

        • Facts and Myths About Wind Tower Values
        • Cybersecurity in the Real Estate World
        • The Appraisal Process and Industry

And start the event off with a fun night Sept. 9 in partnership with the Young Professionals Network at Fernson Downtown.

You also can earn continuing education credits as a bonus. But anyone is welcome.

“Whether you are a doctor looking at buying a building or investing, or a lawyer looking to understand development projects, as long as you are interested in real estate, you should be at this event,” McKnight said.
