Downtown GreatLIFE location open 24 hours for the summer

As the calendar turns over to June, the GreatLIFE/EmBe downtown location on West 11th Street switches to its summer schedule. This year, however, the location is trying out 24-hour access for its members.
The 24-hour access schedule began June 1 and runs through the end of August. Most GreatLIFE locations already offer 24-hour access. The decision to change to a 24-hour schedule downtown was driven by the desire to cater to the younger downtown population, according to Cole Nelson, fitness manager for the branch.
“The young professional crowd tends to work out at unconventional times, which is typically because many don’t work at typical hours,” Nelson said. “If they get out of work at 11 p.m., they might decide to hit the gym. So we wanted to give them access to the facility whenever they want to come in and get a workout.”
The expanded hours also might be incentive for gym-seekers to consider a GreatLIFE membership, he added.
“If people are able to come in during the hours that we aren’t staffed, that just increases their opportunity to use our facilities.”
After staffed hours, GreatLIFE members have to scan their key fob at the front door to gain access to the building. The 25-meter pool, basketball court and fitness studios for High Intensity Interval Training, TRX and spin classes are closed before and after staffed hours.
The area that is open during unstaffed hours is the fitness floor, which features Matrix equipment, squat and dumbbell racks and a Smith machine. There are also two restrooms available for changing and cubbies to store personal items.
Until Labor Day, the GreatLIFE/EmBe downtown location has all of its amenities open and staffed from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
