Soukup Construction acquires Asphalt Surfacing Company

May 1, 2026

Soukup Construction Inc. has acquired Asphalt Surfacing Company, growing its capabilities within the construction industry.

Both companies are based in Sioux Falls.

Soukup was founded in 1963 by Carl and Marietta Soukup in Scotland, South Dakota, essentially with a bulldozer and a pickup truck. It’s grown to about 150 employees providing earthwork and utility services across eastern South Dakota.

Asphalt Surfacing Company, or ASCO, was founded in 1960 in Sioux Falls.

“As family-owned businesses, each company has long shared a commitment to the people they employ and the clients they serve,” Soukup said in a statement.

“This acquisition marks a meaningful coming-together of two organizations that have worked side-by-side on countless projects throughout their histories — often as subcontractors to one another.”

The decision “was a natural one,” Soukup vice president Matt Millage said. “The two companies’ services are complementary.”

Soukup specializes in site preparation, earthwork and utilities, and ASCO specializing in civil, commercial and residential asphalt paving. The combination organization has 175 employees.

The combined organization means a more streamlined experience with greater opportunities for cost efficiency, improved schedule control, and unified coordination from site prep through final paving, the company said.

“This acquisition also reflects something Soukup Construction Inc. has always believed in: the importance of supporting the communities in which it operates,” said Nate Gonseth, Soukup’s CFO.
