Brandon sports bar closes after 17 years

March 25, 2025

A Brandon sports bar has closed.

212 The Boiling Point posted the news Tuesday on social media.

“After careful consideration, we regret to inform you that we have made the difficult decision to close our business. This decision comes with mixed emotions, but it is necessary as we move forward in different directions.”

Kyle Thill bought the business at 328 S. Splitrock Blvd. in 2019 from Mark Fonder, who opened it in 2008. Thill had served as a bartender at The Boiling Point when it opened and then at Wileys in Sioux Falls for five years before returning as owner.

He said he had been trying to sell it for the past year and a half and had multiple offers, but they all fell through.

“It was the right time for me,” Thill said of the decision to close The Boiling Point. “It’s been slowing down over the last year. When you think it can’t get any worse, it’s not getting any better. … I borrowed from family, put everything I had into it. I couldn’t buy any more time.”

Between a power outage on Saturday that took down the point-of-sales system for 90 minutes and then a water issue on Monday that kept the bar from opening, Thill decided it was time. “It was a blessing in disguise” but bittersweet as well. “I love the place. I’ve been there a long time.”

He said he helped his half-dozen full-time employees line up other jobs and now has to decide what’s next for him.

“I’ve got some other business ventures I’ve looked at,” Thill said. “It’ll be something without a lot of employees, equipment and expenses.”
