Hobby Lobby opens as ‘cornerstone’ to Lake Lorraine

By Jodi Schwan

Without Hobby Lobby, attracting the other new retailers that will open this month at Lake Lorraine would have been difficult if not impossible.

The store, which opened Monday, moved from 41st Street where it had done business since 1997. Lake Lorraine is between Interstate 29 and Marion Road, south of 26th Street.

“It was absolutely essential to get a critical mass out here,” co-developer Mike Van Buskiri said. “Hobby Lobby was instrumental in that. The size of them along with our other retailers finally gave us what we needed to put the entire project together.”

The store is about the same size as it was in its former location but with a slightly different layout.

With Hobby Lobby committed to moving to Lake Lorraine, developers also secured Ross Dress for Less, which opens Oct. 6, and Marshalls and HomeGoods, which open Oct. 19.

“The trick on a new development is getting one to follow another. They won’t come by themselves, but when you get a group together they do it,” Van Buskirk said.

“Hobby Lobby really became the cornerstone to this. Their size and the fact they were willing to pick up an extremely important store to them and freshen it up and bring it to a new location in Sioux Falls really helps sell the Lake Lorraine story.”
