Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.
The owner of food truck Geo’s Hamburger Shopp has taken over the kitchen of The Gaslight Lounge. Geo’s, which is known for its old-school cheeseburgers and lobster rolls, is the most recent occupant of the tiny kitchen that’s tucked in the back of the bar at 2206 W. 12th St. It opens at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and serves food as late as there’s a crowd. Lunch service is available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Zest Social House is coming to the former Dunn Brothers Coffee building at 8220 W. 12th St. Owner Janelle Whempner is creating a cafe and also will teach cooking classes there. The menu will include sweet and savory toasts, baked goods, desserts, ice cream, a fresh fruit and ice cream treat that’s popular in New Zealand, espresso drinks, beer and wine. It’s expected to open sometime this month.
GoodSpirits Fine Wine & Liquor is going out of business, likely in July. The store, which also sells gasoline as part of Taylor Oil Co., is at 41st and Minnesota. It has been in operation for 28 years.
A Sioux Falls family has brought indoor miniature golf to the city. Pirates Plunder Black Light Mini Golf opened in late May at 1503 E. 10th St. In addition to an 18-hole course, the business offers an arcade that’s mostly filled with claw-style games. It’s open daily.
Two national retailers have opened in The Empire Mall. JD Sports is next to the Sanford Children’s Play Area in the former Lane Bryant space. It offers athletic footwear, apparel and accessories. Gap Factory is down the hallway near Macy’s, where it remodeled several storefronts into one. Owned by Gap Inc., it serves as a lower-priced brand for more value-conscious customers.
A new business, Le Oui Oui, has taken over the kitchen at the downtown cocktail lounge The Hello Hi at 120 S. Phillips Ave. Owner Duy Pham offers a mostly French-themed menu, along with New York-style pizza by the slice or whole pie. It’s open Tuesday through Saturday nights.
Pet Wellness Veterinary Hospital has opened inside the PetSmart on Louise Avenue and is building a hospital at 4600 E. 59th St. The nonprofit hospital, which is part of the Hanson Family Foundation for the Well-Being of God’s Creatures, provides payment-plan options and offers qualifying clients the chance for financial help to care for their pets. The foundation also created Animal Resource Center, which provides rescue groups with products and services. A third program, the Shepherd’s Stable Equine Center & Sanctuary, provides rehabilitation, training and sanctuary for unwanted horses. It’s based at a 16-stall stable near Sycamore Avenue and 85th Street.
A fire has destroyed the Pinz bowling alley and cafe in Dell Rapids. “We don’t know what the future holds,” owner Casey McCoy said in a post on social media.
Brunch restaurant Over Easy has opened at Dawley Farm Village. It’s an Arizona-based concept, and the business at 5722 E. 18th St. is owned by local franchisees. Breakfast, brunch and lunch dishes are made from scratch. It’s open from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily.
The new Four Nations Food Truck features Native American, Mexican, Asian and American food, with a rotating menu, owner Maxi Southard said. The truck has an espresso machine and also serves energy drinks, refreshers, dirty sodas and mocktails. It focuses on breakfast and lunch pop-ups at businesses and then weekend events. Four Nations also is available for private gatherings.
Real estate agent Kendra Harris has launched Pink House Real Estate LLC, a business focused on training, marketing, branding and technology resources for real estate professionals nationwide. Harris has been licensed in real estate since 2006 and spent the past decade in leadership, marketing and training roles within the real estate industry.
