Unique Junque opens on East 10th

March 8, 2019

Unique Junque is settling into its new Sioux Falls home and filling the space with repurposed furniture, home decor and other handmade items.

The building at 1510 E. 10th St. also includes a DIY studio where mother-daughter duo Remington Cain and Jordan Doyle offer workshops.

They turned a vacant building into a store that reflects their do-it-yourself skills — some of the windows, walls and ceilings are covered with reclaimed wood and tin. On a snowy day last week, the two women were making their own hand-painted sign with the store’s name to hang outside the building.

“We’re getting in all new stuff all the time,” Cain said. “Every Wednesday night our ‘Junque Teams’ drop off items, and we put them in the store.”

In addition to furniture and home decor, those makers from South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa offer a variety of merchandise such as accessories for dogs, baby items, jewelry, jams and jellies.

Unique Junque also rents out space in three consignment rooms and four booths for vendors who want to control the display of their inventory.

Two boutique vendors offer women’s clothing from small to plus sizes, and one plans to start carrying children’s clothing, Cain said. Customers can use a small changing room to try on clothing.

In the studio space, the women plan to offer several classes a week in addition to hosting private parties. Projects are always changing, and they range from signs and clocks to blanket ladders and wreath posts. Upcoming classes include one that will allow customers to choose between making a personalized dog dish, toy box shaped like a dog bone or sign for their pet. For Easter, there’s a workshop on making a bunny basket. They also teach how to paint furniture.

The original Rowena location will be open one weekend a month and now will sell only the furniture pieces Cain and Doyle make and repurpose. It also will continue to host the outdoor Rowena Junque Markets.

Hours in Sioux Falls are 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The store has a parking lot on the west side of the building.
