Trolley service starts with new business model

From staff reports

Downtown trolley service starts today, May 26, with an adjusted business model.

The Main Street Business Improvement District will provide a funding base for trolley operations, and a funding gap will be covered through tickets sales, advertising and Downtown Sioux Falls Inc. merchandise.

The fare remains $1, and children younger than 5 can ride for free. Booklets of 25 trolley ride passes can be bought for $25 in the DTSF office at Shriver Square at 11th Street and Phillips Avenue.

Businesses interested in advertising on the trolley can buy ad space and sponsor seats for 12 months.

DTSF president Joe Batcheller said he is optimistic about the upcoming trolley season.

“I think we can exceed sales goals with tickets and merchandise, prove this funding model works and hopefully expand trolley service in the future,” he said.

“It took some time to determine the right business model for the downtown trolley because potential funding sources took several months to vet. Thanks to the dedicated work of our trolley task force, we were able to formulate a model that can sustain the trolley year to year.”

Trolley service runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday. It will operate until Labor Day, which is Sept. 4.
