Sweets and drinks go purple and gold

Jan. 19, 2018

Apparently, eating purple and gold cupcakes, doughnuts and ice cream, and drinking purple alcoholic beverages are appropriate ways to celebrate the big game Sunday for the Minnesota Vikings.

Several businesses and bars are bringing out the colors for the game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Unless you have the stomach of the long-ago sea-faring raiders, we’ll recommend that you choose either the desserts or the alcohol.

Here’s a lineup of some of the offerings we discovered:

Flyboy Donuts is decorating doughnuts in purple and gold. Order online by midnight the day before for pickup the next day. Get a dozen for $11 or a souped-up version with eight doughnuts and four maple bacon doughnuts for $15. If the Vikings win Sunday, you can order that night and have a dozen ready to grab on the way to work.

Half Baked is baking up two versions: a chocolate cupcake with gold cream filling and a vanilla-almond cupcake made from batter that is dyed purple and gold. Order a dozen for $32 ASAP or buy individual ones out of the case through Sunday.

Oh My Cupcakes is decorating four flavors of its cupcakes in team colors. Choose from Brunette, Twisted Purple, Gold Pleasantville and Party Animal. Order a half-dozen for $17.70 or a dozen for $32.50. The shop is closed Sunday, so place orders ASAP and be prepared for pickup or delivery by 6 p.m. Saturday. The bakery at The Bridges at 57th also will have some available in the case.

Smallcakes Cupcakery and Creamery is going bold with swirled purple and gold cake and frosting. Order in advance, call to reserve or stop by the bakery at Lake Lorraine to pick up what’s available until they’re gone. Note that Smallcakes isn’t open Sunday. Owner Dani Nordhagen said she’s going to be baking and decorating a lot: “I’ll be dreaming of purple and gold.” Get a half-dozen of the “larger than average” cupcakes for $22.50 or a dozen for $36. A gluten-free option is available. The shop also is offering vanilla ice cream that’s dyed purple and gold — $3.75 for a scoop or $10 for a pint.

The Attic Bar & Grill is dying Coors Light purple for Sunday’s game. The staff hasn’t tested out the color yet but is confident the end result will be decent!

Overtime Sports Grill is making a Purple Passion drink with vodka and grape soda, and Safari Bar & Grill in Renner has concocted a Purple Rain drink.

Remedy Brewing Co. debuted Skolberry for the Jan. 14 game and plans to have it on tap again. The wheat beer was made with more than 200 pounds of fresh organic blueberry puree. According to the description on Facebook, “it’s a crush-able wheat ale that pours purple, and just like our favorite team, finishes just a little tart.”
