April 1, 2019

Building activity in Sioux Falls for the first quarter came in just shy of the record set for the same time two years ago but ahead of last year.

Permits through March totaled $133.6 million, up from $104 million during the same time last year and just behind the $135.1 million in permits issued in 2017.

Commercial activity is ahead of last year, with $54.3 million in permits issued for new construction, compared with $42.8 million for the same time last year. Permits were issued for $45.7 million in additions and renovations, compared with $20.8 million a year ago.

Residential construction is lagging behind last year, with $24.1 million in permits for new construction, compared with $31.5 million. That represents 74 single-family homes compared with 107 homes one year ago.

Multifamily construction is down too, with permits issued for 136 units compared with 272 units one year ago.

Major projects that were issued permits in March included the Hyatt Place hotel at Lake Lorraine, valued at $9 million, another phase of the Silverthorne Flats apartments in east Sioux Falls at $4.6 million, a kitchen renovation at Avera McKennan at $2 million and the Look’s Market renovation of the former Callaway’s at $1.2 million.
