Sioux Falls author writes children’s book about working moms

A Sioux Falls author is publishing her first book, a children’s story called “My Favorite Job Is You,” written from the perspective of a working mother.

Author Ashley Flynn enjoyed writing while in school and started doing it leisurely when her daughter, Nina Rose, was born two years ago.

“I’d come up with these little rhyming ‘blurbs’ while I rocked her to sleep. I don’t know if the sleep deprivation or hormones made me more creative, but suddenly I could write a poem about anything,” Flynn said. “Sometimes the writings were just silly and nonsense, and other times I’d pick a topic that was on my heart and turn it into a poem or short story.”

Flynn worked in fundraising and said she experienced “mom-guilt” after her daughter was born as she sent her to child care.

“I felt a bit isolated as it was a difficult topic for me to discuss,” she said. “I finally came to the realization, I can’t be the only person who feels this way!”

While adjusting to her new normal, the idea of writing a book about a typical day came to her.

“Our hectic mornings, getting through a long day at work, coming home to more chaos, all while dealing with this emotional roller-coaster of feelings,” she said. “I just knew other working moms could relate.”

Her book is a light-hearted poem in the voice of a mom talking to her child about how “my favorite job is you.”

“My hope is that this book gives working mothers the encouraging words they not only want to say to their children but also to themselves,” Flynn said. “Having a career you are passionate about does not take away from the love you have for your child.”

The book will be released May 1 on Amazon and at some area stores, as well as Flynn’s website, flynnstorytelling.com, where it’s also available for pre-sale.
