Project coordinator hopes to build on family business legacy

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Erica Schmitt, a project coordinator at Limoges Construction.

Name: Erica Schmitt

Age: 32

Hometown: Sioux Falls

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

I was born and raised in Sioux Falls. I left for college and came back right after. Originally, I had lofty plans for my future in a big city, but Sioux Falls has always been my home, and I knew I would make my way back.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

Good people, continual growth and opportunity. The culture in Sioux Falls is endearing; we have so much to offer, from our vibrant downtown to the bike trails and everything in between.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

Seeing the project transformations go from preliminary drawings to a grand opening. We have had the opportunity to work on buildings in our community like the downtown CNA/Hilton developments to Ava’s House and Feeding South Dakota. Learning the story behind these projects is inspiring. Our city has many visionaries that have collaborated to make Sioux Falls the alluring place it is today, and I am proud our company has been able to contribute.

What made you decide to become part of your family business?

Growing up, I witnessed the immense amount of hard work that comes with starting a business and maintaining it. My primary motivation is to carry on my family’s legacy by contributing to keep the business alive for generations to come.

Describe Limoges Construction in three words.

Quality, dedication, family.

What do you think people might be surprised to learn about your business?

Many people who are not familiar with our business would be surprised to know we are not seasonal; we pour commercial concrete all year and employ around 65 to 85 people annually. Thirty percent of our employees have been with us six years and longer, which we are pretty proud of considering the high turnover rate in the construction industry.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

Trader Joe’s.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In the next five years, I hope to have expanded my personal and professional skills, acquire additional responsibility within the company and become more engaged in the community. And take a vacation — or two. 🙂
