Gullickson recently became executive director at Grand Living, and her heart is in working with seniors. It’s a journey that began at age 14 when she worked as a nurse’s aide and continues as she leads the exceptional Grand Living at Lake Lorraine team.

What attracted you to Grand Living?

When I learned that this exceptional community was hiring an executive director, I knew I’d be honored for the opportunity to lead. I am proud to be local and well-connected; they needed a local, well-connected leader. This is absolutely the right place for me.

What sets Grand Living apart?

Our founders each have more than 30 years of experience in the industry. Our signature programs, such as The Sterling Touch customer-service model, the Luminations program serving residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia, Bravo! incorporating music and more, are truly what set us apart. Also our exceptional dining venues, where residents order from a menu and all food is made to order.

Do you feel like many people are still discovering Grand Living? What’s their first reaction?

Absolutely, people are still discovering Grand Living. Our guests are continually “wowed” by our dining venues, outstanding service, our on-staff pianist and our warm and welcoming team. We’re exceptional but still accessible and a tremendous value.

Guests also appreciate our on-site fitness coordinator, spa and our beautiful Forum Theater. Many of our residents appreciate the arts. Every quarter, we host a significant concert. It’s a very special part of our culture and an honor to provide service and community in that way.

What’s the biggest surprise most people find when they learn about Grand Living?

The exceptional value. Because “Grand” is in our name, people may not know how down-to-earth we are. Often, visitors are surprised by the exceptional value we provide. Our rates are competitive. The offering is second to none. Also, Grand Living is a national company. One of our founders is from Miller, S.D., and a graduate of USD. We believe that Sioux Falls and the surrounding community deserves a place like this.

You have a unique community for memory care called Luminations. What distinguishes it?

You have to see it to believe it. The space is wonderfully designed, and the team who works in Luminations is specially trained. In addition to the direct-care team, a Luminations director oversees the program and is engaged in the day-to-day services. Also, a dedicated Facets life-enrichment team member oversees daily carry out of activities. The fitness coordinator engages residents in various wellness activities. Just last week, residents were tie-dyeing, baking, card playing, craft making, exercising, and at the end of the day, tired! They also can choose dining options from a menu buffet three times each day.
