Krebs to lead new Avera Academy
March 12, 2019
Former South Dakota Secretary of State Shantel Krebs has been named administrator of the Avera Academy, a new partnership with Sioux Falls School District and Southeast Technical Institute.
Two dozen high school seniors are expected to participate in the program beginning this fall. They will spend mornings Monday through Thursday on the Southeast Tech campus doing coursework and Friday mornings on Avera’s campus learning more about careers in health care. They will earn both high school and post-secondary credit.
Avera Health is providing funding to cover the cost of the partnership and also will help provide tuition assistance to those students who want to continue their education at the college level.
Southeast Tech offers 15 degrees or certificates in the health care and medical technology fields, including sonography, coding, phlebotomy, surgical technology and nursing.
Krebs served a four-year term as secretary of state beginning in 2015 and also has served as a state senator and state representative. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Dakota State University.
