Houses removed for future downtown development

Jan. 30, 2018

Three aging houses are being demolished on the south end of downtown to make way for future redevelopment.

Legacy Developments bought five parcels along Minnesota Avenue near 13th Street in 2013. Two had been unoccupied for several months. Tenants in month-to-month leases vacated the third property in late 2017.

“Because they were unoccupied and because the cost to maintain the properties became prohibitive, we chose to remove them at this time even though there are no pending plans for the area,” Legacy spokesperson Stacy Jones said. “We worked closely with any remaining tenants to help them find a new place to live.”

Salvageable items including woodwork and hardware were recycled or donated to charitable organizations, she said. No other property in the area is being affected.

Legacy hasn’t set a time line for finalizing a development plan for the area.
