Guatemalan bakery to open on downtown’s east side

April 24, 2019

A Guatemalan bakery is coming to the east side of downtown.

Edwin and Sandra Besestre are starting Guatelinda Bakery at 919 E. Eighth St. They will begin remodeling work soon and hope to open by June, said their daughter Mitzy Besestre.

The bakery will make authentic Guatemalan sweet bread, and sweet and savory pastries on-site, Besestre said. The recipes are from her maternal grandfather, whose family were bakers in Guatemala.

“My parents took it up as a hobby, but as more and more people have tried their bread, they’ve decided to pursue it further,” she said. The couple will work there together.

Besestre said her parents immigrated to the U.S. from Guatemala more than 25 years ago and have been in Sioux Falls for the past 15 years.

They’re still figuring out the design for the space – a former tax preparation office – but “there might be just a small coffee bar to sit down and have a complimentary cup of coffee,” Besestre said.

Guatelinda Bakery will be open daily.
