Get ready for a first-of-its-kind event guaranteed to be a great time and a way to give back.

GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness will hold the first 5K Warrior Trail Run and Walk on Oct. 7 at Inspiration Hills near Inwood, Iowa.

For adults, it’s 5K of fun around 15 crazy obstacles.

“Without giving too much away, we have over-under walls, sandbag carries, a hay bale climb, crawling through a little creek, and then you finish with a giant slip-and-slide,” director of fitness Nick Ovenden said.

The first race is a kids 1-mile run with obstacles beginning at 9 a.m. The second race will be competitive and start at 9:30 a.m., and the third will be an open/fun run starting at 9:45 a.m.

Each wave is limited to 50 people and will start every 15 minutes.

Sign up soon because interest keeps growing.

“I get emails and text messages from people every day asking about this race and obstacle course races in general,” Ovenden said. “For people who like to be competitive and aren’t distance runners, it’s perfect. It’s a short distance between obstacles. The goal is to get there, complete an obstacle and move on.”

GreatLIFE has seen more people taking advantage of personal training and high-intensity group classes to prepare for obstacle races, he added.

Two obstacles are planted outside the Performance Center at 69th Street and Southeastern Avenue, “and those are two of the actual events that will be there, so people can come try it,” he said. “I’ve seen so many people going out there and trying it out.”

Plus, participation fees go to a great cause – Inspiration Hills camper scholarships and the GreatLIFE Cares Foundation, which will donate its proceeds to Trenton Bass, a Hills-Beaver Creek football player seriously injured while playing this season.

And even if you aren’t feeling quite ready to tackle the course, “you can come cheer people on,” Ovenden said. “The more the merrier, and if you’re curious, just come out so you can see if it’s something you want to do next year.”
