Furniture business appears to be winning bidder for Toys R Us space in Sioux Falls

June 20, 2018

A furniture business that calls itself a contemporary home furnishings destination rooted in Nordic culture is the highest bidder for the Sioux Falls Toys R Us space.

Scandinavian Designs, which is based in California, wants to buy the location on the campus of The Empire Mall. It’s also the highest bidder on four other Toys R Us buildings across the country.

A bankruptcy judge will decide Monday whether to accept the bids. Toys R Us in Sioux Falls is scheduled to close Tuesday.

Scandinavian Designs is known for modern design and quality craftsmanship, according to its website. It was founded more than 50 years ago by a native of Norway who had moved to the U.S.

Its products include bedroom, living room, dining room and office furniture as well as home decor. There are locations in nine states, and the closest to Sioux Falls is in Roseville, Minn. It appears in several online blogs and news sources as a furniture shopping alternative to IKEA.

Other bidders on Toys R Us stores nationwide include Ashley Furniture, Aldi, Burlington and Big Lots.

The backup bidder on the Sioux Falls location is Grand Sakwa/Huntington LLC, a large Midwest real estate developer.
