Frozen treat shop gets city’s permission to open

June 4, 2019

The city of Sioux Falls has agreed to a compromise that will allow Dakota Snow/Sub Zero Desserts to open its converted shipping container as a frozen treat shop while a customized trailer for it is built.

The business ran into a city-regulation roadblock with its plans to open a semi-permanent location in the parking lot of Your Pet Stop at 501 E. 41st St.

A meeting Tuesday afternoon between owners Jessica and Matthew Rooney and city officials had a satisfactory outcome, Jessica Rooney said.

“It’s a happy meet in the middle, I think,” she said.

A trailer for the shipping container should be ready by July 1. In the meantime, Sub Zero Desserts can sell its shaved ice and rolled ice cream out of the unit, which was moved to the site in May.

The Rooneys, who planned to open Memorial Day Weekend, feared that they wouldn’t be able to open until the trailer was ready, which would have cut into their already-limited season.

Rooney hopes to receive a restaurant license yet this week and open Sub Zero Desserts by the weekend.

In addition to shaved ice and rolled ice cream creations, the business will serve hot and iced espresso drinks and acai smoothie bowls.

Hours will be 2 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 2 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, noon to 9:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 7 pm. Sunday. They’ll be adjusted depending on demand, Rooney said.
