Family Dollar to add Minnesota Avenue store

April 18, 2019

Family Dollar is adding a location on Minnesota Avenue.

The chain has taken out a permit for a sign at 2511 S. Minnesota Ave., which is the former Lamps & Shades Lighting Gallery. Before that, the building was a Sunshine Foods. Lamps & Shades closed in 2016.

Family Dollar is leasing the space, which is more than 10,000 square feet, from building owner Sercl Family LLC and is expected to open late this summer.

“This location at Minnesota Avenue and 33rd Street is perfect for Family Dollar and for the neighborhood,” said Kristen Zueger of Van Buskirk Cos., who represents the listing.

“Their nearest location at Eighth and Minnesota has left a gap in an area of town that Family Dollar has found, through their market studies, needs to be filled. The new store will be a wonderful, complementary neighbor to Bagel Boy and U.S. Bank.”

This will be the fourth Family Dollar in Sioux Falls and likely one of few new stores this year. Last month, the nation’s second largest dollar store announced it would close almost 400 stores this year as it looks to reposition itself. The Dell Rapids store is closing May 18.

Family Dollar is owned by Dollar Tree, which also has three Sioux Falls stores.
