Easy ways to work off your Thanksgiving meal – or at least part of it

This piece is presented by GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness.

Hours after one of the biggest meals of the year, are you finding it hard to get motivated to move? Nick Ovenden, director of fitness for GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness, has some simple advice for those trying to counter a little overindulgence this holiday season.

The team at GreatLIFE Performance Center is ready for post-Thanksgiving workouts.

I overkilled. Ate too much, drank too much, not even sure I can move. I need a workout, but I also need some motivation. What do I do?

First off, congratulate yourself for being a champion eater! Next, make a decision to get up right now, literally right now, and get moving. Go to the gym, find a fun class, or walk the stairs at home.

Assuming I can get into the gym, what kind of workout do you suggest that will take my Thanksgiving binge into account?

If you enjoy your holiday foods as much as do, then I’d have to live on a treadmill for a week to burn it all off. As tempting as that sounds — or doesn’t — make sure you do quality strength training sessions that fatigue your large muscle groups — chest, back, legs. This has shown to increase your metabolism for up to 72 hours following a quality strength training session.

The holiday season in general is rough. The parties. The stress. How should I fit my workouts in?

Keep them short and intense and in the mornings if at all possible. Personally, I work out before work as there are so many holiday events that come up in the evenings. It also stays in the back of my mind and forces me to make better choices while at these parties if I have to get up and work out the next morning!

I am one of those people who bounces right back. Does GreatLIFE have something a little more intense for me this Thanksgiving weekend?

We have the Holiday Extravaganza going on this holiday season, and it is a great way to burn off those holiday treats before you start.  If you missed the session before Thanksgiving, you can still catch up on Christmas Eve Eve and New Year’s Day. Here’s more on how to get involved.

OK, I’m a GreatLIFE member and I’ve got a long weekend, but I just don’t know that I want to spend it in the gym. Is there anything else I can do to be active?

You bet! We have several options outside of the gym. My daughter’s favorite places to head to are Sky Zone, where GreatLIFE members receive discounts, which is holding a Black Light Black Friday promotion all day Nov. 24. They’ve got deals on food, games and giveaways from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Skate City

We also love Suburban Lanes, where bowling is free for members, and you can hit some golf balls in the simulators. And this holiday season we are also planning on teaching my daughter and her cousins how to skate at Skate City, which also has great discounts for GreatLIFE members.

It’s never been a better time to join GreatLIFE, either. To learn more, click here.
