Downtown boutique named state’s most beautiful independent store

Nov. 5, 2018

Palmer Lea, a boutique in downtown Sioux Falls, has been named the most beautiful independent store in South Dakota by Architectural Digest magazine.

The publication recognized the most beautiful retailer in each state.

“Not only are these shops beautiful inside and out, but they also realize the American dream. In a nation with hundreds, if not thousands, of worthy contenders, the task of choosing just one from each state was by no means easy.”

Palmer Lea was founded by Kayleen Leonard as Coquette Couture. It rebranded and moved to its space at 206 S. Phillips Ave. two years ago after totally renovating it.

Leonard said she was contacted about a possible article over the summer and sent in some photos but didn’t think much more about it.

“What a surprise,” she said in sharing the news on the store’s Facebook page.

“This store has been a labor of love. I took a huge leap of faith when I decided to not only rebrand Coquette but up and move my store to downtown Sioux Falls. I saw the vision, my family saw the vision, but there is always a chance the vision and reality won’t match up,” she said.

“I couldn’t have done this without my family. My dad did the whole entire build-out himself with help from my brothers. We didn’t hire it out, we didn’t have any professional design help, it was just us, and that is why this store and this article is so special.”
