Design studio holding furniture, home decor pop-up

An interior design business is adding a pop-up furniture shop for the next three days.

Interiors Etc. at 3201 S. Prairie Ave. has been owned by Mary Kelly since 1975. She has had stores at Park Ridge Galleria and 8th & Railroad Center but got out of retail about 10 years ago to focus on her design services.

Her son, Richard, recently joined the business after moving back from Minnesota. He has worked as a buyer for a furniture store on the East Coast. Together, they had the idea to try a pop-up shop.

“We’re not usually open to the public,” Richard Kelly said. “We have clients who come in, but we bought inventory for this three-day event.”

It will run from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 22, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

The inventory is a broad selection of furniture and home decor, including “pillows, throws, coffee tables, a sofa in our design studio, a nice kitchen island, vases, lamps, artwork and flowers,” he said.

He said the styles are fairly trendy and most prices are moderate.

“We have some glass vases that are $6, but we also have a kitchen island that’s about $1,600,” he said. “And some of the things in our studio we don’t necessarily have prices tags on and they are higher quality.”

The Kellys are planning more pop-up events this year but want to see how the first one goes.

“If it’s successful, we’ll keep with it,” Kelly said. “The response I’ve been getting as I’ve gotten the word out is people are excited about it.”
