Cirque du Soleil on ice comes to Sioux Falls with rare six-show run

Sept. 5, 2018

This paid piece is sponsored by the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

For the first time in its 34-year history, Cirque du Soleil is putting its acrobatic show on ice.

Cirque du Soleil Crystal arrives Sept. 20-23 for six performances at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

“Not only do you get the thrill of acrobatics and aerial displays, but you get freestyle, extreme and synchronized skating with it,” said Lucy Albers, senior marketing manager at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

“It should be really cool to see how all of these world-class athletes choreograph an ice performance. Many of them are champions in their field – and some are even Olympic athletes.”

The storyline follows a creative young woman who feels misunderstood, Albers said. To escape her reality, she ventures out on a frozen pond and falls through the ice into an upside world. There, her imagination comes alive and embarks on a journey to find her true self.

While several family-oriented shows come to the Premier Center each year with two or three performances, a six-show run like this is uncommon, Albers said.

“With these performances, the stage area is pushed up further, allowing us to only use half of the arena in what we consider a theater setup. This allows for a really intimate show where you have a great view from any seat.”

The Premier Center has hosted Cirque shows in 2014 and 2017, and feedback was wonderful, Albers said.

“While smaller kids might not be able to sit through the show, Crystal is family-friendly, and we’ve heard many great comments from parents of how enthralled their kids were with these performances. So whether it’s a date night or new experience for the whole family, this show will be a blast!”
