Architect credits firm for bringing her to Sioux Falls

Dec. 4, 2018

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Katie Krantz, a partner/member at VanDeWalle Architects.

Name: Katie Krantz

Age: 34

Hometown: Milbank

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

VanDeWalle Architects. When starting to look for full-time employment during my last semester of college at North Dakota State University, my fiance — now husband — strongly suggested that I first look for available jobs in South Dakota. This would allow us both to have an opportunity to work in fields we went to school for and also stay close to family — and so he could keep his South Dakota resident hunting license!

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

Work! My husband, Rodney, and I are both very fortunate to have great jobs, which allow us to be involved in the industries we are passionate about. I love working at VanDeWalle, from the people I work with to the relationships we build with our clients.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

I love that no two days are the same. We design a variety of project types, so at any given time I’m managing multiple different projects, all in different stages of design or construction. My two favorite stages are the early schematic design phase when you’re trying to piece together the client’s visions and then at the end of construction, seeing the client’s visions completed in reality.

How did you get connected to your industry?

I would love to say that I have been influenced by great architecture since I was young, but growing up on a farm and not traveling much, that wasn’t the case. I was a creative child and loved arts, crafts and playing with Legos. When looking at colleges and majors, architecture caught my attention. It wasn’t until I started my architecture classes at NDSU that I found my passion for architecture and the construction industry.

Describe VanDeWalle Architects in three words.

Creative. Committed. Collaborative.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

I volunteer my time with numerous groups that aim to give back to the community. My husband and I also donate to various organizations and causes through the year.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

Crate & Barrel.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I see myself helping to continue the success of VanDeWalle Architects and continuing the search for the perfect work/life balance.
