All-natural lotion bars launch handmade business

A stay-at-home mom from Elk Point will debut her all-natural lotion bars, lip balm and skin products at the 605 Made Night Market on Aug. 25.

Stacia Buchholtz is the owner of Five Birds, which started after she began making lotion bars three years ago. Her interest was sparked after failing to find products that didn’t have added-in chemicals or unnecessary ingredients.

“When you look at the ingredients on lotions, one of the first ingredients a lot of times is alcohol, which is counterproductive because it dries out your skin,” she said.

Buchholtz began experimenting using essential oils and beeswax as a base for her lotion bars. From there, she gave them as gifts before people started asking her for more.

“Then I thought, what if I could take this further?” she said.

She started selling Five Birds products at the Vermillion farmers market before branching out into the surrounding area. The 605 Made Night Market is her first time selling Five Birds in Sioux Falls. The market starts at 5 p.m. and continues under the stars until 10 p.m. in the parking lot of Cherapa Place.

In addition to lotion bars, she is selling bug bars, lip balm and aloe plants. The bug bars, Buchholtz said, are dual-purpose because they not only help repel insects but also smooth skin irritations through herbal ingredients.

Buchholtz said once people start using products such as hers, they notice a difference.

“It’s part of a trend that’s shifting as more people are realizing the benefits of nature.”
